What Shapes the Life of Crossroads Baptist Church

Crossroads Baptist Church seeks to be shaped in its doctrines and church life by Jesus Christ.  There are five phrases coined in the Protestant Reformation of the 1500's that define New Testament Christianity. Even though they were written in Latin (the world language at the time), they can be easily understood in English.  Crossroads Baptist Church is committed to preach and teach the following.

I.  Doctrines and beliefs are based on Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone).    In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul wrote, "All scripture (the written record of God's revelation) is given by inspiration of God (literally: God breathed or given by God Himself) and is profitable (beneficial) for doctrine (what we believe about God, life and mankind), for reproof (refuting sin in our lives) for correction (straightening us out), for instruction in righteousness (instructing us in how to live righteous lives) (17) that the man of God may be complete (in his understanding of the faith) and thoroughly equipped for every good work."  While man's writings are helpful, Scripture alone is the basis for belief and doctrines.

II.  Life and ministry is centered on Sola Christus (Christ alone).  Christ alone is qualified to save sinners from their sins.  This is the truth of the gospel that was preached by the Apostle Peter to a crowd of Jews in Jerusalem just a few days after the death and resurrection of Christ.  He said,  "There is salvation in no one else (speaking of Christ), for there is no other name (Person) under heaven given to people by which we must be saved."  (Acts 4:12)  Crossroads preaches that people are saved, and kept saved, by Christ alone because He alone lived a perfect life.  He alone died as the perfect and final sacrifice for sinners.  He alone paid the penalty of death sinners deserved.  He alone rose from death the third day.  He alone ascended to heaven. He alone sits exalted at the right hand of God, the Father.  He alone brings salvation, a meaningful life, and the certain hope for eternal life.

Crossroads Baptist Church not only preaches that people are saved and kept by Christ alone, it seeks to be directed and empowered by Christ alone.  The Holy Spirit points it to Christ as its Lord and Master.  He shapes and transforms Christians into His likeness as they walk with Him, trust Him and obey Him.

III.  Salvation is totally dependent on Sola Gratia (God's grace alone).  People are sinners by nature and by choice.  Therefore, they deserve everlasting condemnation for their sinfulness.   Without God's grace, they are dead to the things of God.  The good news is found in Ephesians 2:4-5. "But God, who is rich in mercy because of His great love with which He loves us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ, (For by grace we have been saved)." (Ephesians 2:4-5)  Because of God's love, grace and mercy, He comes to sinners in their deadness and raises them to a new life in Christ.

IV.  Salvation is received through Sola Fide (faith alone).  Paul wrote,  "And be found in Him (in Christ), not having my own righteousness, which is from the law (becoming right in God's sight by obeying His laws that are found in the Bible), but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith." (Philippians 3:9).  One must not put his trust for salvation in any good deeds he may do.  Such things, in and of themselves, are like filthy rags in the sight of a Holy God.  A person receives salvation and acceptance before God through faith alone in Christ alone.

However, even though salvation is received through faith in Christ alone, faith is never alone.  It is accompanied by a life of good works that are done to honor Him.

V.   Salvation results in Soli Deo Gloria (God's glory alone).   Those who receive salvation in Christ recognize that they were made by God and for God.  They were made in His image so that they might share in His life.  Therefore, they say with Paul, "Whatever we do in word or deed, we do for the glory of God."  (1 Corinthians 10:31)  The chief purpose of life is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

In summary, Crossroads Baptist Church preaches that Christians are new creations in Christ.  They base their lives on Scripture alone.  They trust in Christ alone for salvation.  They are saved because of God's grace alone.  They have received salvation through faith alone.  Therefore, they seek to live for God's glory alone.
